“I want to hear some revolution out there brothers
I want to hear a little revolution
Brothers and sisters, the time has come for each and every one of you to decide whether you are going to be the problem or whether you are going to be the solution
You must choose brothers, you must choose
It takes five seconds, five seconds of decision, five seconds to realize your purpose here on the planet
It takes five seconds to realize that it’s time to move, it’s time to get down with it
Brothers, it’s time to testify and I want to know, are you ready to testify?
Are you ready?”
So begins the MC5 song, “Ramblin’ Rose”, rock & roll from the late 60s when protests for social justice were as ubiquitous as they are today.
Where do you and I fit in?
I suggest that each one of us must pick a path in this new paradigm the world is shifting into. Teacher. Healer. Warrior. Innovator.
Search your soul and you will find that you identify with one of these four categories of change makers. Everyone has a deeper life purpose; whether or not your chosen career path fits into those molds, finding ways to identify as one of the four is critical to not only finding our soul’s purpose but fulfilling it.
I have a client who is a workplace law attorney, and absolutely passionate about her role as a warrior. She fights each day for those without a loud voice, for those who are taken advantage of and whose issues often shoved under the proverbial rug. She fights for justice and rallies for change. Yet she comes to me for healing. She made it very clear years ago that one individual does not have to be everything, as she heard me drawing comparisons.
I’ve spent a lot of time volunteering with organizations close to my heart, lending a hand to the women’s rights movement and training as a domestic violence victims’ advocate. I’ve prepared and delivered food in downtown LA for meals on wheels, and joined marches and peaceful protests against GMOs and immigrant detention. Yet each time I returned from the trenches, instead of feeling like I made a difference I felt enraged. My whole body carried the burden of anger at the injustices in our world. I felt sad and helpless and….angry. My client helped me understand that my journey wasn’t – and didn’t have to be – as a warrior. I am a true healer and have embraced my path with clear direction and the knowledge that I do make change and I do help at the individual level.
The world needs all of us. It needs warriors to fight for change; we need humans like Martin Luther King Jr and Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai. It also needs teachers like Gandhi, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Anne Sullivan to open our minds and show us new ways of thinking and being. It demands healers-Dr. Andrew Weil, Ida Rolf, Deepak Chopra, Eckhart Tolle – those who align with the divine and allow spirit to flow through them and into others. The world needs innovators like Steve Jobs & Elon Musk, forging ahead with safer and better models of technology improving the human condition. (Although the contribution of modern technology as a point of improvement can certainly be argued.)
Where do you fit in? Perhaps your day job doesn’t allow you to shine. Where can you be of service and share your gift outside of the 9-5? We ALL have a role; discover yours.
There’s so much injustice on the planet; it can be overwhelming trying to address all of the issues. Feeling split in one million directions can be paralyzing, and can also create tremendous stress in the body. We can be most effective when we align ourselves as a teacher, healer, warrior, or innovator, and begin to walk that path…making the world a better place one step at a time.
